On Her Stomach Nude Drawing
On Her Stomach Nude Drawing is a charcoal sketch of a naked woman lying on her belly with one foot raised in the air. She is propped up on her elbows and looks straight ahead of her.
I always loved drawing this figure model as she had a kind of ‘vintage’ look. I could imagine her as the perfect muse for a series of Art Deco paintings.
This life drawing was done with charcoal on A3 Fabriano paper. I sometimes like to bring out the tonal qualities of the charcoal by smudging a little. And pull out the highlights (her backside and shoulders) with a kneadable eraser.
I focused on varying the thickness of my lines. Some are dark and heavy; other lines are lighter and gestural. I only had 30 minutes to do this charcoal drawing, thus I wouldn’t fall into the trap of overworking it.
This original life drawing/figure drawing was done from observation with a live model during a timed session.
By setting a time limit, and drawing exclusively from life, the artist is forced to reveal their thoughts, mistakes, their personality, their searching for expression, their recognition and understanding of forms, and their connection with the medium and the model.
In much the same way as one discloses oneself through their handwriting, so an artist reveals their inner life through their lines.
